As a metalworker, you sometimes face challenging projects. In this post, we’ll look at one of the trickiest tasks and explain how to cut corrugated metal with a CNC plasma table.
The main issue is that the automated controls battle because of the changes in height. However, you can still get it right by using the correct plasma cutting settings.
Prepare Your Equipment
Before we start with the cutting techniques, let’s look at how to prepare:
- Start with the right CNC table setup: Make sure everything’s working correctly and that the gantry and cutting bed are properly aligned.
- Choose the right torch tip: You must use the correct tip for precision metal cuts.
- Set the appropriate current and air pressure: You should check your owner’s manual for this.
Secure the Corrugated Metal
When it comes to potential hazards and solutions, securing the sheet is essential for safely operating your machine. Lay the metal as flat as possible and clamp it to reduce vibrations. In metal fabrication, the more movement there is, the worse the cut.
Set the CNC Program
Now, let’s look at how to cut corrugated metal. You need to slow the cut speed because the torch will raise and lower consistently. You’ll want to slow both the X and Y axis to give the torch time to make its way over the corrugations.
The downside is that the slower speed causes more dross to attach, so make sure that the side that you’ll see will be on top.
The actual use case will dictate how much dross is acceptable. If no one will ever see the underside of the piece, it won’t really matter. If, however, it’s visible, you may need to smooth this out afterward.
You can minimize this by setting the Z axis relatively high. This allows the torch to rise and lower more quickly. With professional metal cutting, it’s advisable to do a dry run without cutting to ensure you’ve got the right settings.
Perform a Test Cut
Your next step is to actually cut a scrap of metal that’s the same as the final piece. You should monitor the machine to make sure the torch moves smoothly. Check the cut quality and make sure it’s up to your standard. If not, tweak the settings.
It’s worth running a few passes to get the settings perfect.
Perform the Final Cut
Now, lay your metal piece and plug in the plasma cutter settings. Again, monitor the actual cutting process to ensure the torch follows the metal’s contours properly. You also need to make sure that the metal doesn’t shift loose. If necessary, pause the machine to reset it.
